40th Anniversary Gig

1 July 2010 No Comment

“Unique experience doesn’t really do it justice”
“A trip down memory lane”
“I don’t recall ever attending anything quite like it”
“A magic evening”
“Not just another night in this old city”

Just some of the reactions to the night of 29 May 2010 when String Driven Thing celebrated 40 years since the release of the eponymous first album on the Concord label. In the lead up to the event, the original line up of John Mannion, Chris & Pauline Adams made a nostalgic trip to Rouken Glen Park in Glasgow to update the original sleeve photograph.

The old and new photos were on the guest passes which were sent out to fans who came from Spain, Holland, England and all over Scotland. One fan from USA was gutted that he was unable to attend the event which was held at a top secret location in the West End of Glasgow.

The audience of about 50 were treated to a set by the current band and, after a short interval, John, Chris & Pauline turned the clock back 40 years.

Augmented by the current band members, they delivered a stunning set culminating in a raucous version of “Heavy Mary” followed by an encore of “Circus”.
All who attended thoroughly enjoyed the unique evening with old friendships rekindled and new friendships formed. It’s unlikely that this will be the end of the affair as it is planned to reprise the gig for the public in both Edinburgh and Glasgow later in the year.
